Story Boards
These are drawn up so the Camera Operator/Cinematographer can see exactly what kind of shot the director wants and how he wants them to be shot. They don't show every frame in the production, but just enough to get an idea of what it's going to look like.
Some directors have started using a video storyboard technique where they get a camcorder and take it to set with the actors and do a test run of each scene so they can get a visual look at how each shot looks, even if it isn't anywhere near as good quality as a film camera.
