Music Video Timeline

60's

Videos were made to promote the music, sometimes in films as well. The Beatles were the first group to make conceptual videos (no performance and doesn't really relate to what the song is about)

70's

Opportunities grew to show these clips and more markets became available, record companies began to demand clips on a regular basis. The video of Queens hit song 'Boheimian Rhapsady' was requested to be shown on TV instead of them having to lip sync the song and programmes requested the video to show  rather than the band performing.

81

The music video suddenly became essential marketing and MTV was started. Video directors started to mess around and experiment with different styles and formats for the music videos.

83

The video for Michael Jackson's song 'Thriller' was released and cost $50,000, this was directed by John Landis.

84

The VMA's (Music Video Awards) was launched, basically an awards ceremony specifically for music videos.

92

MTV started to credit the director of the music video's instead of just the artist.

I used final cut pro 7 to edit my sea world promotion video. I think that my video looks very professional and does what it's meant to do (promote Sea World). I think its strengths are that the video flows really well and works well with the music, it's weaknesses are that I could of been more creative with the transitions.
